What is it about a sweeping water view that prompts an immediate sense of inner peace? Certainly that feeling imspired Charles Fox Hovey, a 19th century tycoon, who built for his wife this romantic Tuscan villa overlooking the sea. Crystal Chandeliers suspended from 12-foot ceilings, gilded mirrors, gleaming parquet floors, antique French wallpaper and seven working fireplaces contribute to the atmosphere of relaxed elegance. Each bedroom is unique but all offer period furnishings, original art work, cozy sitting areas, exceptional antique beds and private baths (some with 6-foot soaking tubs complete with bubble bath.) When darkness falls, the beam of the Eastern Point lighthouse sweeps across bedroom ceilings.
In the morning guests relish offerings from a breakfast buffet that features regional Italian, Portuguese and New England specialties. From tables set on the awning-covered veranda, the view of Ten Pound Island is the same that George Clooney beheld as he set to sea in "The Perfect Storm". The Charles Hovey House has earned its reputation as the perfect setting for romantic milestones such as a marriage proposal, an intimate getaway, an anniversary celebration or a large family reunion.
